The
Vogelsang rotary lobe pump actually uses a flooded
suction within the pump to create a vacuum. So
long as the fluid level remains above the pump
opening (as is the case with primed gooseneck
or 90 degree style flanges) the pump is capable
of pulling a 28 foot column of water with no trouble.
Since straight flanges do not provide for the priming effect which allow for the full vacuum pull the pump can be expected to provide, a much shorter column of water can be lifted.
We cannot overcome physics, and, at least in this universe, straight flanges will not provide conditions ideal for suction lift applcations.
