A pump has to generate a negative pressure at the suction port to draw a fluid up into the suction area. The maximum height that a fluid with a specific gravity equal to water can be drawn is about 30 feet from a tank open to atmosphere.

At certain speeds, using HiFlo lobes and gooseneck or 90 degree flanges, our pumps can move air allowing the pump to evacuate air in the suction line, drawing fluid into the pump.

The higher the lift, the more difficult it becomes for the pump to evacuate the air in the line and pull the fluid up the pipe. The maximum recommended lift for a Vogelsang Sludge Pump is 25 feet. To achieve better results in suction lift
applications, the use of smooth wall pipe is highly recommended. This will reduce friction between the liquid and the piping.

Another consideration in suction lift applications is mechanical seal design. Vogelsang Mechanical Seals are the best choice in this application, as packing may draw air into the gearbox when performing higher suction lifts. Also, Vogelsang’s oil-filled, closed blocking chamber alleviates the need to flush mechanical seals with water, a necessity with the open style seal chamber in other pumps, thus reducing maintenance, and the need for outside water sources.
